Getting to the Luton & Dunstable University Hospital

The L&D is located next to M1 motorway (Junction 11), between the towns of Luton and Dunstable. The main entrance to the hospital is on Lewsey Road, which is accessible from Dunstable Road. Please see below for a map of the local area.

Arriving by Bus:

Arriva and Centrebus both have routes to the L&D.

Centrebus runs route number X31between Luton Station/Town Centre and Flitwick, Toddington and Milton Keynes. The X31 service stops next to the hospital on Dunstable Road.

The following Arriva buses stop next to the hospital on Dunstable Road, Lewsey Road or Calnwood Road:
7, 8, 31 and 38 from Luton and Dunstable
60 Luton to Studham
61 Luton Airport to Aylesbury via Tring
69 Luton Station/Town Centre to Leighton Buzzard
70 Luton Station/Town Centre Milton Keynes

Arriving by Train:

The nearest train station is Leagrave which is approximately 1.5 miles from the hospital, and is served by First Capital Connect. Luton’s main train station is approximately four miles away from the hospital in Luton town centre.

If arriving by train to Luton town centre there are a number of bus services to the L&D:
from outside Luton station
from Silver street (Town centre)
from outside the Galaxy Leisure Centre

Arriving by Motorcycle/Cycle:

Motorcycle parking is free for solo motorcycles.
There are a number of bicycle parking facilities throughout the site.

Car parking facilities and drop-off points:

The hospital map shows the car parks around the L&D and the three drop-off points available. In addition, patients and visitors can drop-off and pick-up free of charge in St Mary’s car park if the time spent is less than 10 minutes.

Charges

Pay on Foot (POF) is currently used in the St Mary’s (Dunstable Road), Lewsey Road and off Calnwood Road car parks. Drivers need to take a ticket on entry, then before leaving the hospital pay the fee at the Pay Station (on foot) and then place your validated ticket into the machine when you drive to the exit barrier. POF stations accept coins, notes (change given) and debit/credit card payments.

NB. The Dunstable Road car park is only accessible from the eastbound side (heading towards Luton) of the dual carriageway.

Pay & Display (P&D) is currently used in the Calnwood Road, Maternity and Breast Screening visitors car parks. Drivers need to pay the relevant fee at the Pay Station and display the ticket on their windscreens. Please be aware that the P&D pay stations do not take bank notes and you will need to have change available to pay for your parking, however, Debit/credit card payments are accepted.

Concessionary charges

Concessionary rates are available for some patients and visitors, however Blue Badge holders will pay the full charges for parking unless they qualify for the concessionary rates. Please see below for more information.

Patients and visitors

Concessions are available in certain circumstances if you are attending the L&D for treatment or as a visitor, and are applicable to Pay on Foot car parks. Please speak with the ward staff for conditions of use.

Out-patients attending regular appointments

Patients attending regular or pre-planned treatment programmes with more than five outpatient visits during a single course of treatment (e.g. chemotherapy), can be granted parking fees of £1 per visit.

Visitors

Immediate family members making regular visits to ITU, HDU, CCU and in-patients admitted for more than five nights stay will pay £4 for a full day (24hrs). Payment is made to the *Cashier’s Office or if ‘out of hours’ at the Security Office. A ‘Request for Concessionary Parking’ form must be completed and authorised by the relevant Ward Sister, Charge Nurse or Departmental Head.

*Cashier’s Office opening hours:
Monday to Thursday – 09.00-12.00 and 13.00-16.30
Friday – 09.00-12.00 and 13.00-16.15

Carers and Birthing Partners

Caring and Birthing partners will pay £4 for a full day (24hrs) and any additional/extended period over this should be authorised at the discretion of the Nursing or Midwifery Staff.

Parents and Carers in the Paediatric Unit and NICU

Parents and Carers can be granted free parking during their child’s admission. Speak to ward staff to validate your ticket at the end of your visit and proceed to the Car Park exit.

Parking control charges

Please note that the hospital land is private property and parking control is managed by UK Parking Control Ltd. Failure to comply with the car parking rules at any time will result in a £70 parking charge being issued (reduced to £40 if paid within 14 days).
